Bush Sunflower, Encelia californica, is an evergreen perennial sunflower shrub, 3-4 ft high. Encelia californica is a good large-scale ground cover with 2 inch daisy flower. Native from Santa Maria to San Diego. Very drought tolerant. This sunflower grows along the coast so is not very cold tolerant in cold interior climates. It will recover from 27 degrees F., but will die to ground, at about 20 degrees F. Has beautiful cut flowers. Encelia californica is best mixed with Ceanothus or Salvias for short-term fill-in with Quercus or Rhus planted for longer term.
