Ceanothus thyrsiflorus is the California lilac that you see along the coast from about Lompoc and then north up into Oregon. When you're driving along the Big Sur coast with the top down, looking at the ocean and the banks of blue flowers, these are the blue flowers. This Ceanothus does fine in the San Joaquin Valley and inland portions of Los Angeles, also.
