Arctostaphylos tomentosa ssp. subcordata is a manzanita that is supposed to only occur on the Channel Islands, but occurs (according to Smith and Hoover, and we found it in a couple of surveys also), in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties on hillsides near to the top of coastal hills/mountains. Santa Cruz Island Manzanita needs great drainage, sun to part shade and dust-free conditions. On one mainland site it is near Quercus agrifolia, Lupinus formosus and Arctostaphylos wellsii, and on another site near Arctostaphylos glandulosa, Eriodictyon capitatum, Ceanothus impressus, Quercus agrifolia, and Dendromecon rigida.
