Buttonwillow can occur as a 3 foot bush to 20 foot tree (Kern Canyon). It's deciduous, likes sun, water, and tolerates alkaline soil. The leaves are 3-6", and smooth, dark- green. The 1-2" creamy white flowers are in spherical clusters that look like pin cushions. The fall color is good (bright yellow with some orange). A good stream side revegetation plant. Easy as long as you have water. Seeds eaten by waterfowl.

Cephalanthus occidentalis var. californica tolerates alkaline soil, sand, clay, no drainage and seasonal flooding.

Foliage of Cephalanthus occidentalis var. californica turns a different color in the fall, has color silver and is deciduous.
Flower of Cephalanthus occidentalis var. californica has color white.

Communities for Cephalanthus occidentalis var. californica:Valley Grassland, Mixed-evergreen Forest, Riparian (rivers & creeks) and Southern Oak Woodland.
