Munz lists four 'tendencies' that have largely geographic separations. An inland perennial form that ranges away from the coast from Wash. to S.Cal. This is var. crocea that has large orange flowers in spring and a succession of smaller and more yellow flowers later in the season. Use the form if you possibly can that is in your area. In USDA zones 5-7 it will become an annual.
