Giant Sequoia is a grey conifer with moderate growth. Sequoiadendron giganteum is slower, grayer, more drought tolerant, and more cold tolerant than Sequoiadendron sempervirens. This Redwood will make it as far north as Rhode Island. It has the same type root system as S.sempervirens only a couple of meters deep and very wide spreading. Understory and associated trees include .Arctostaphylos patula, Abies concolor, Pinus ponderosa, Pacific dogwood (Cornus nuttallii), California hazel (Corylus cornuta var. californica), white alder (Alnus rhombifolia), Pacific yew (Taxus brevifolia), Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), bigleaf maple (Acer macrophyllum), bitter cherry (Prunus emarginata),canyon live oak (Quercus chrysolepis), bush chinkapin (Castanopsis sempervirens), mountain misery (Chamaebatia foliolosa), mountain whitethorn (Ceanothus cordulatus), littleleaf ceanothus (Ceanothus parvifolius), deerbrush (Ceanothus integerrimus), snowbrush (Ceanothus velutinus), greenleaf manzanita (Arctostaphylos patula), and western azalea (Rhododendron occidentale).
