This manzanita species is an evergreen shrub, 3-8' tall, native to the central Sierra Nevada from 2500-6000' elevation. A crown sprouter, it will regrow from the live root system after fires and so is indispensable, and aids in gradually revegetating slopes and reducing erosion. Its new growth bronzy -red turning grey green as the foliage ages. Not very hardy nor garden tolerant compared to others, I'd guess about 0-5 degrees F. is about as low as it can go. It would be useful in a chaparral planting to add diversity.
