Aaahhh! Here is the very lovely Leptodactylon californicum, Prickly Phlox, which emerges and delights us for such a short time in the spring! - grid24_24

Leptodactylon californicum, Prickly Phlox, is shown here in its natural habitat, with Ceanothus cuneatus in the foreground, Adenostoma fasciculatum behind it, and the Prickly Phlox almost at the top of the ridge. I cringe when someone says California native plants are brown and ugly. Put a non-native plant on this hillside, do not water it, and see if it looks better. - grid24_24
Leptodactylon californicum, Prickly Phlox. play movie
Prickly Phlox, Leptodactylon californicum, is a subshrub, 1-3 ft tall. Flowers are very Fragrant and bright pink. Native from San Luis Obispo Co. to Los Angeles. Needs full sun and excellent drainage or it will rot. It wants little or no summer water. It is cold tolerant to 5 deg. or less. Stunning spring color, a dry pokey nasty thing in summer. This is a great plant if you have no soil, no water and your yard is like an oven (I'm sure I'm not the only one). Sprinkle seeds out in the fall on bare soil in places you are not going to need to be crawling around in later, you can't really get water too and you want some color.

Leptodactylon californicum tolerates sand.

Foliage of Leptodactylon californicum has color green-gray and is deciduous.
