An evergreen, 5-10' high shrub, Hairy Manzanita grows along the coastal plains in the evergreen forest from northern California to British Columbia. A fuzzy, light- green plant that grows under pines, it has surprised us and is doing well here both in containers and in the ground (sandy loam). It seems to be one of the faster-growing manzanitas. It grows in areas that receive rainfall from 35 to 80 inches per year. Munz says it grows on rocky or clay soils, and I've only seen it on sand overlaying hardpan, that is SAND! Like the previous species, it needs good drainage (no standing water after 60 minutes in a 1 foot hole), and will not tolerate the high heat of the interior of California.

Arctostaphylos columbiana tolerates sand and clay.
Arctostaphylos columbiana is great for a bird garden.
Foliage of Arctostaphylos columbiana has color gray and is evergreen.
Flower of Arctostaphylos columbiana has color white.
Fruit of Arctostaphylos columbiana is edible.
