A perennial grass, with creeping underground stems, aboveground stems are rigid, leaves are tough, up to 4 1/2 feet in height, flowers not showy, grows in coastal salt marshes along the coast of California and also in Mexico.

Spartina foliosa tolerates seaside conditions, salt, sand, no drainage and seasonal flooding.
