A tufted perennial grass. Florets and seeds are in a distinct ornamental structure. It is native in the upper elevations of the southern California desert mountains to Wisconsin and south into Mexico. Tolerates regular water or no water. Suitable as a coarse (very coarse) 'lawn'. (syn. Chondrosium gracilis)
