Bifid referring to the top of the fruit covering which is cleft into two parts, , somewhat tufted perennial to 5 ft. hgt., mostly in the coast ranges of CA, more uncommon in the Sierra Nevada, lvs, flat, near wet places, seeps, springs, creeks, meadows, often in serpentine soil, an indicator of serpentine in the coast ranges of CA, fairly widely distributed sedge, and grows on non- serpentine soil, use as other sedges in gardens, near pools and low, moist areas of the garden, can also be used if you live in a serpentine area, as many of the new housing developments are being placed in serpentine areas of CA, to 6000 ft.
