Western mountains 200-8000 ft. moist but not wet situations, deciduous tree to 20 feet a beautiful background for azaleas and such under high shade, won't look at its best under drought but seems to survive (it has surprised us), a fall show that will knock your socks off many winters. It has had the brightest foliage we've seen one year. This Betula grows well near the coast, I have no idea why. If you have to put the three little birches next to the ditch with rocks in it in the little yard in Oceanside, this is the tree for you!

Foliage of Betula occidentalis turns a different color in the fall, has color silver and is deciduous.
Flower of Betula occidentalis has color na.
