Arctostaphylos hookeri Monterey Carpet manzanita is a foot by four foot evergreen shrub. It is not the best for interior plantings but good along the coast. It will survive well in beach sand, and is also garden tolerant but not as tough in cold or drought as Wayside manzaita. We have real trouble with this plant in our nursery climate. It will only survive in a shaded heated greenhouse. It looks a great deal like all the individuals of Arctostaphylos hookeri that are around the coastal portion of Monterey County, growing under Pinus radiata (shaded in the coastal fog belt growing on sand).
