Ceanothus thyrsiflorus  'Skylark'  form of Ceanothus is a California native lilac cultivar that possesses much darker leaves than any other individuals of this species that we have observed. A very formal California native, the bright blue flowers on the deep green foliage look edible (actually makes a decent tea...).

One of the smallest of the native lilacs. Easily held to three feet by three feet. If you mix this Ceanothus with Arctostaphylos 'Sentinel', 'Harmony', 'Brother James' or 'Howard McMinn' you can create a delightful 3 ft. border hedge. OR, use as a accent in a large scale ground cover in a mix of 'Harmony', 'Brother James', 'Sunset' and 'Yankee Point'.

It should do well where Ceanothus thyrsiflorus does well. A California native to be tried along the east coast within sight of the ocean on the bluffs as it is in the wild on the west coast. Very garden tolerant. Will grow in sand, but really prefers clay. This Ceanothus loves adobe.

This Ceanothus  is hardy to 0-5 degrees F. but will show some leaf burn at 10 degrees F.
