An evergreen tree slow to 80'. (We have some that are 5 years old and 8' tall.) The leaves are green on upper surface, fuzzy on lower surface. Native from Ventura Co. to southern Oregon. A very beautiful tree. The leached acorns were ground into flour by the Indians (tastes like bitter oatmeal). No cold damage at 12-15deg., leaf burn at 5-10 deg.,a lot of death at 0. A very neat tree for formal wood gardens (such as a redwood garden with benches and shade loving perennials). If your rainfall is less than 30-35 inches a year put this one in a watered lawn or watered flower bed as it will need the extra humidity. I would expect this one to be fine along much of the eastern seaboard. It looks very formal. Oaks.
