(Mimulus aurantiacus, Diplacus longiflorus var, calycinus, Diplacus longiflorus ssp. calycinus)It is a little startling to see a monkey flower in full sun amongst the cactus and saltbrush. We saw it in the Pinyon-Juniper , Joshua Tree Woodland and in full Creosote woodland amongst the barrel cactus.. It will perform fine in the desert if given some summer water. I find it fascinating that the coastal form, D. longiflorus longiflorus, is MUCH more cold tolerant, more drought tolerant, and more heat tolerant. Diplacus calycinus is garden tolerant and makes a great flower show. Commonly found in rock crevices or under boulders. Click here for more about Monkeys in California
