Description

Rose Sage is a 3 foot tall shrub with attractive blue flowers in showy purple bracts. This sage is similar to S. dorrii which occurs in juniper woodlands. Salvia pachyphylla needs no summer water in most of populated California and excellent drainage. Rose Sage likes full sun/part shade/filtered shade and sandy soil, with no weeds. Grows in light shade under Pinus jeffreyi, Pinus coulteri, and Pinus ponderosa. Also grows in full sun between pines and oaks such as Quercus kelloggii, and Quercus chrysolepis. Deer don't seem to like it much. Rose Sage has silver foliage and is evergreen. Butterflies and hummingbirds like Rose Sage. Tolerates a lot of stuff, mulch, rocks, drought, some water, doesn't tolerate heavy clays, drip, or fog.
