Eriogonum crocatum

Description

A one foot perennial with yellow flowers in April-Aug., leaves woolly-white like dusty miller. Native to Ventura Co.. It performs well in dry coastal areas, needs protection from afternoon sun inland and some regular water. Not super cold hardy as it freezes to the ground at 20 deg in containers and 15 in the ground. It recovered a 5 deg. night in December 1991 but took 6 months before they grew back. They prefer clay soil, but they tolerate most soils. They are difficult out of their area. Customers from the Southern Ca. coastal area report it easy and vigorous. A rare plant. The buckwheats are very important butterfly plants and one of the pillars of their communities. The flowers, leaves and seeds are all used by all the smaller animals.
