Description
Ceanothus oliganthus A sprawling shrub that grows on north- facing slopes in coastal southern California. The plant in the picture was observed in the Moorpark area, growing in gravelly, sandy soil. It would be a very appropriate shrub to plant in upland portions of that area. In inner San Diego county, (Ramona, Valley Center) Hairy-Leaf Ceanothus fill the canyons with blue each spring. Hairy-Leaf Ceanothus, what a stupid name, the leaves are not very hairy, if at all. Probably named after an old herbarium specimen that had mildew. Fast and a good bird/wildlife plant. But I cant picture telling a customer, Theres your hedge of hairy leaf Ceanothus. I mean, why not Blue Canyon Lilac? Click here for more about California Lilacs (Ceanothus). Why do the roots of some of the Ceanothus look funny?
