Ceanothus oliganthus var. oliganthus

Ceanothus oliganthus var. oliganthus. A sprawling shrub that grows on north- facing slopes in coastal southern California. The plant in the picture was observed in the Moorpark area, growing in gravelly, sandy soil. It would be a very appropriate shrub to plant in upland portions of that area. In inner San Diego county, (Ramona, Valley Center) Hairy-Leaf Ceanothus fill the canyons with blue each spring. Called Hairy-Leaf Ceanothus, though the leaves are not very hairy, if at all, in our area. Fast and a good bird/wildlife plant. But I can't picture telling a customer, There's your hedge of hairy leaf Ceanothus. I mean, why not Blue Canyon Lilac? Click here for more about California Lilacs (Ceanothus).
