Santa Cruz Island Manzanita needs great drainage, sun to part shade and dust free conditions. On one mainland site it is near coast live oaks, Lupinus formosa and Arctostaphylos wellsii. On another near Arctostaphylos glandulosa, Eriodictyon capitatum, Ceanothus impressus, Coast Live oak, and Dendromecon rigida.
