A woody perennial that arches from the base with slender, rather delicate stems branching into even more delicate branchlets and pedicels with with big flower on it. This pitcher sage grows on ridges and north slopes with a little Chamise, Otay Manzanita, Cercocarpus minutiflorus, Salvia munzii, Ribes malvaceum, Cupressus forbesii, Trichostema lanatum and Quercus dumosa(berberifolia). Very rocky decomposed granite with crevices and boulders is the normal hang out. I spent as much time looking for snakes as looking at the plants. In a garden it should grow fine with a rock next to it, at the top of a rock wall, along a wall on the east side of the house, or in the middle of a parking strip.
