Zauschneria california, Epilobium, Uvas Canyon is a California fuchsia that grows very will in a large pot or container garden. It was originally collected between San Jose, Santa Cruz and Gilroy. - grid24_24

"I collected Zauschneria Uvas-Canyon in about 1986 or so in Uvas Canyon, which is slightly south west of San Jose. It has been by far, the hardiest of all my Zauschneria, and the plant in my garden in Lake County came from a cutting I took back then-it is almost 40 years old!!! Takes extreme drought and freezes, and gets about 2 ft. tall. Very light silver leaves and long bloom time. Again, extremely hardy, and much more so than U.C. hybrid. In any case, i'm still growing it!" Karen Sullivan of Lake County Natives

This California fuchsia is drought tolerant along the coast and many places inland.

Zauschneria 'Uvas Canyon' has very grey fuzzy foliage with hot red-orange flowers that flower for many weeks in early fall. A good hummingbird plant. It will handle first zone seashore(probably because of the  fuzzy foliage). Mix with California Aster, Yarrow, Seaside Daisy,  and California Goldenrod to make a very nice summer border of COLOR along a lawn. This mix is a great transition planting between a lawn and a native garden.

Zauschneria 'Uvas Canyon' can be used as a small scale ground cover for a small summer-fall garden. You'll need to mow it down every December or so, but it can become a nearly flat 'lawn' with red flowers.

Also known as Epilobium canum, 'Uvas Canyon'
