Zauschneria californica Ghostly Red

Zauschneria californica Ghostly Red

Identification

Genus: Zauschneria Species: californica Variety: Cultivar: Ghostly Red
Common name: Red California Fuchsia.

Description

(Epilobium canum) A one foot high grey-green leaved perennial California native hummingbird fuchsia. Its flowers are intense red. 'Ghostly Red' has the purest red flowers we've seen on a California fuchsia. The foliage adds to the dazzling with its fuzzy grey foliage. The plant looks like a grey acrylic sweater that was just removed from the dryer and someone sprinkled red hots all over it. This California fuchsia likes and tolerates a range of conditions from full sun, no water after established near the coast or at higher elevations to regular and part shade in the interior valleys or desert. They tolerate many conditions, soils and climates. A good ground cover for sunny slopes. Just tall enough to attract the hummingbirds, low enough to be neat and tidy. This plant is sensitive in containers and will go deciduous in summer(110 dry heat) or winter(blizzard) on us. So do not get excited when a trashed- looking plant arrives by UPS, it will be VERY happy when you plant it. They almost always think they are in spring, even in Bakersfield in July, or Portland in January.
