Pajaro Manzanita is an upright, evergreen shrub, that can reach three feet by twelve feet wide, but is commonly smaller. This manzanita has dark red bark, white flowers, and bright red new growth that sells the plants well in the nurseries. If you keep it pruned once a year you will end up with a three foot round mass of flame red each fall turning nearly purple here. There is a bank of them in Availa at a condo that have not been pruned. They were about eight feet across with no inner leaves or stem structure, and ugly! Parajo was in two other coastal gardens where the plants were side trimmed a few times and the manzanitas became these wonderful mounds of foliage colors(green, purple, and red) and flowers. A rare manzanita, the red color on the new growth is so vibrant that everyone that sees this plant in our garden inquires about it.
