Wax myrtle, Myrica californica is better in cooler summer areas, in warmer inlnd areas it can be grown but should be washed down at least once a week. Wax myrtle cannot tolerate dust. A dusty myrtle is an unhappy myrtle. It's cold tolerant to 25 degrees in containers, 20 deg. in ground. Wax myrtle is not very drought tolerant so it usually needs some summer water. A good hedge or screen along the seashore as it tolerates beach wind as long as it is away from the salt spray. It seems to prefer sandy or loam soils but it is not very drought tolerant in them. Clay soils mulch heavily and be carefull with the water as it dies early with it. Sun to part shade. It is nitrogen fixing.
