Identification
Description
Sentinel' manzanita is part of the hybrid swarm of manzanitas in and around Sonoma County. Sentinel' was selected way back when as an upright floweriest of manzanitas in the stand. Like 'Harmony' manzanita but grayer and taller,six by five feet. Sentinel' manzanita will tolerate heavy, rich soils but much happier in sandy loam or sand and is more drought tolerant than the other densifloras. One of the best performers in beach sand. It is one of the plants that has survived our (lack of) care in the garden here. Like most other manzanitas does not tolerate salt spray. It has red bark and seems to be one of the faster manzanita. Ours has grown to full size in 2 years. It is not as hardy as 'McMinn' manzanita or 'Harmony' manzanita. Our mother plants took a hard hit at 5 degrees. We've had some problems along the coast in Southern California with leaf gall, but then again, some customers are fascinated with the reddish growth on the leaves and want to buy the ones with the biggest galls.
