A large evergreen bush normally 6' tall but if in coastal clay can get 10' tall. The flowers are white with red stripes or red with white stipes, and 2-3" across. It's similar to Abutilon. It will take salt spray and all the coastal problems. Native to the Channel Is. of Ca.. The containers cold damaged at 25 deg.. The plants in the ground show no damage at 20 deg., froze out at about 15 deg.. It seems to be very drought tolerant and not care about soil type as long as it drains.

Lavatera assurgentiflora tolerates alkaline soil, salt, sand and clay.
