This is the Sierra form of Ceanothus cuneatus and is commonly associated with Coffeeberry( Rhamnus californica tomentella), Flowering Ash ( Fraxinus dipetala) and Mountain Mahogany( Cercocarpus betuloides) in red clay-loam soil. A very deep blue flowered Ceanothus with small holly leaves that bambi does not seem to like. Sierra Buckbrush grows into an eight foot or so evergreen bush. Use as a light border hedge. This plant is extremely showy during the flowering period in spring, and looks good at other times of the year, being evergreen. Ceanothus cuneatus Sierra shines as a companion/nurse plant for slower-growing species such as oaks, coffeeberry, and toyon, a plant that adds significant amounts of nitrogen into the soil by virtue of its nitrogen fixation capabilities, and a very fast-growing, showy pioneer plant for new landscapes. Also, quail eat the seeds and use the plant as cover. Click here for more about Mountain Lilacs.
