This Alum Root is a 1' perennial with a 2'spike of very dainty white flowers, a hundred or so spikes at a time on a happy plant. Foliage in clumps 1-2 feet across with 4" reddish-green leaves. A little more cold tolerant than Heuchera maxima. It's native in the inner coastal areas of much of California, through the Sierras and Cascades up into to Idaho and British Columbia.. In the inner areas of its range it must be under heavy shade and snow because our plants freeze at 0, recovering poorly, and at -10 they do not recover. When this plant is clumped it makes a very delicate show that is first class. If you have a shade garden with a little spot 2-3' across that you need a little 2' flower show this is it! It likes high shade, regular water with good drainage. It survives here on once/week summer water. The flowering stalks are reddish and the contrast of the delicate, cream-colored flowers against the red stems makes this species the most beautiful of the taller Heucheras.
