Grayia spinosa

Grayia spinosa

Identification

Genus: Grayia Species: spinosa Variety: Cultivar:
Common name: Hopsage.

Description

Western deserts up to 7000 ft., evergreen shrub to 4 ft., seeds and leaves vary from dark green to brilliant red, a nice addition to a dry landscape. It is well armed. (The last person I showed this plant to in the wild didn't believe me and slipped when he was looking for the thorns. I learned a new hop-skip step and a few new words.) This one is one of those desert plants with weird cold hardiness. I know it has tolerated -20 in it's range but it is only hardy to 20 here. It will tolerate cold if it is covered with snow, has a slow cold change (hardens off), or has brief dips. If you are in a cold spot and you want to grow it expect some difficulty. An excellent wildlife plant. Never more that 10 inches of rain.
