Diplacus aurantiacus

Identification

Genus: Diplacus Species: aurantiacus Variety: Cultivar:
Common names: Orange Bush Monkey Flower and Sticky Monkey Flower.

Description

(Mimulus aurantiacus, Diplacus latifolius )A perennial with 1" orange flowers. Ours in the nursery have been here for 10 years. They like partial shade and look better with little water. Prune to the ground every three years or so to keep nice looking. It's normally 3-4 feet tall. Cold tolerant to 12-15 deg in the ground with no damage, froze to the ground at 0-5 but came right back. A HUMMINGBIRD PLANT and has been deer proof in all areas to date. It goes dormant in summer if you have a hot dry 5climate. It will grow in any soil including serpentine as long as it has drainage and is not overwatered. The new Jepson combines many monkeys under the moniker Mimulus aurantiacus. They are not even remotely the same in horticulture. Most if not all Mimulus spp. need water,(R type) most Diplacus species are drought tolerant(C type). Some tolerate full sun, some full shade.
