Elymus glaucus

Elymus glaucus

Identification

Genus: Elymus Species: glaucus Variety: Cultivar:
Common name: Blue Wildrye.

Description

A big grass that grows in open meadows, fields, ditch banks, road cuts, etc.. Beautiful if you are a cow. Short lived and rather weedy, blue rye is a good plant to seed into road cuts, horse pastures and such where you do not care about anything but (large)green grass. Of little value to most wildlife, but it is in many plant communities, is important forage for cattle and horses, and usually dies in 1-3 years. If planted for a awn you get a choppy bare/lump/bare planting that you canot easily walk through, is nearly impossible to mow(mow the bottom off of a broom) and then it dies. We grow it primarily for the garden designers that do not read this.
