Stanleya pinnata, Princes Plume , is a 2' perennial with 3' yellow flower spikes. No water after established. Native from just east and souh of us to North Dakota and Texas. Its leaves can be used as cooked greens. In one  location we've seen this growing the rainfall is 8-10" with a dusting of snow every few years. The only other perennials or shrubs on the sites are Atriplex polycarpa, Isomeris arborea globosa, Artemisia tridentata, etc..  Princes Plume also grows out in the desert with Creosote Bush and Prosopis glandulosa torreyana,  Grayia spinosa, Lycium, or Encelia actoni. Or in desert washes with Ericameria nauseosa, Eriogonum fasciculatum polifolium, Prunus fasciculata, Stipa speciosa, Eriodictyon trichocalyx, Atriplex canescens, and Ephedra viridis, E. nevadensis.  But then we've also seen it in a desert osais with Cottonwoods and Vitis girdiana. It also grows on the beach in Malibu.
This is a very beautiful perennial for very difficult places. I mean, if it can grow on Malibu beach it can grow anywhere, right?

This plant doesn't like our diurnal temperature swings(commonly 50 degrees) and freezes back to the roots on bad years.  I know some of the ones in milder climates can live for 10+ years. Rainfall greater than @20"/year will greatly shorten its life.
"Reportedly indicates soil rich in selenium..."(DeDecker, 1988) Tolerates soils very high calcium also.

In a conventional native garden mix with Desert Mallow, Desert Willow, California Buckwheat, Penstemon spectablis and Salvia clevelandii 'Alpine' or 'Pozo Blue'

Stanleya pinnata tolerates alkaline soil.

Stanleya pinnata's foliage color is gray and type is stressdeciduous.
Stanleya pinnata's flower color is yellow.
