Description

A 2' perennial with 3' yellow flower spikes. No water after established. Native from just east and souh of us to North Dakota and Texas. Its leaves can be used as cooked greens. The locations we've seen this growing the rainfall is 8-10" with a dusting of snow every few years. The only other perennials or shrubs on the sites are Atriplex polycarpa, Isomeris arborea globosa, Artemisia tridenta, etc.. This plant doesn't like our diurnal temperature swings(commonly 50 degrees) and freezes back to the roots each year. After about 3-5 years of this it doesn't come back. I know some of the ones in milder climates can live for 10+ years. Rainfall greater than @20"/year will greatly shorten its life."Reportedly indicates soil rich in selenium..."(DeDecker, 1988)
