Satureja chandleri mounts to a foot or so, smelling and lookin good
Description
San Miguel savory Satureja chandleri is a 1 to 2 feet high by 3 foot perennial with very fragrant foliage. With semi-regular water and shade this savory can be easily be kept a few inches tall and be used to spill over walls or grow under a garden bench. Medium green crinkly foliage. Seems to be deer proof and somewhat drought tolerant. Native to the chaparral in Orange and San Diego Co. where it occurs with Quercus agrifolia, Arctostaphylos rainbowensis, Adenostoma fasc., Rhus laurina, Rhus ovata, Lonicera subspicata, Keckiella cordifolia and Dryopteris. For those of you in Northern California the sites look and feels like Satureja douglasiana sites. The plant can look like a shrubby Yerba Buena. Depending on how it's tipped, use as a container specimen, in a perennial garden or a small flat ground cover in that shady patio area. It has small white flowers and a wonderful minty fragrance.
