Description

Kellogg or California Black oak is a fifty foot deciduous tree. Its leaves turn yellow, orange, red in fall. Native to mountains of Sierra Neveda, and coast ranges. In the southern part of its range it will grow at elevations up to 8000'. Black oak likes sun, to part shade(needs when young) and moderate water. In the interior heat it would like part shade or afternoon shade. If you can water it once per week it will grow two foot a year. If planted where it's unhappy it will grow one inch a year. One of the prettiest trees in the world. A lot of color, a neat leaf, with bristles on each tip, and an attractive bark. It is very garden tolerant. Quercus kelloggii will tolerate rich soils as long as they are acidic. It will not tolerate most neutral to alkaline soils, but commonly grows on serpentine soils. It is drought tolerant compared to regular garden plants but do not push it as far as other native trees. If you are planting in a deer area protect for the first few years. Oaks.
