Psorothamnus spinosus
Psorothamnus spinosus Smoke Tree.
Psorothamnus spinosus, Smoke Tree.
Description
Smoke Tree grows in sandy desert washes from Baker across to extreme south Nevada and down through California and Arizona to the middle of Baja. You should try this in the citrus areas of the San Joaquin Valley, and nearly frost free areas of Southern California with sandy or gravelly soils.
Smoke tree likes 1-2 summer waterings as it receives summer rain in the desert. Smoke tree is a small tree with purple, sweet- smelling pea flowers. This desert tree is named for its gray new growth which, from a distances, makes the tree look like a plume of smoke. Smoke tree photosynthesizes through its green stems and has leaves for only a short period.
