Description
Honey Mesquite is a deciduous tree to 20 ft.. Native in the San Joaquin Valley, the Mojave Desert and into Mexico. This Mesquite has edible pods that taste similar to stringy carob pods. Although It does better with a little summer water, once Prosopis reaches water it's off to the races.. We have had it grow a few inches a year until moisture was found, then five feet and in flower within months. It has done well in decomposed granite (sand), or clay (high limestone) even an old parking lot with no perk and high sodium. These are thorny little bushes and shouldn't be put near patios or such. They are best if planted 10-20 feet from a lawn or other watered area. See Cercidium floridum about water-repellent soils. An excellent wildlife plant, from the native bees, through moths, butterflies and birds.
