Description

A very slow growing conifer. Do not expect 15 ft. in your lifetime. The biggest one we've been able to grow was about 3' tall in 7 years. It has 1" grey green needles , edible nuts, ( twenty years to bearing age ), and a distinctly Western Habit. It looks like it needs an old ranch house next to it (maybe in miniature). This tree usually will grow above the desert margins and along with Pinus Jeffreyi is the pine of choice for bad climates and high stress sites. A good bonsai or for small gardens without summer water after second year. The drought has made this tree a beacon for wildlife. Takes many years to produce edible pine seeds. You need patience for this tree! Often this tree will be in sandy or sandstone areas only, surrounded but sagebrush or Joshua trees in a more alkaline loamy clay]
