Pellaea mucronata, Bird's Foot Fern is a gray fern that grows in almost full sun in rock outcroppings in the chaparral.

Description

Bird's Foot Fern is one tough fern. About one foot tall, native throughout California and tolerant of wind, drought, sun to partial shade. Pellea mucronata grows in full unprotected rock cracks above both nurseries. One the slope of above Santa Margarita I know the rocks have reached 130 degrees. (It was 118 in the shade for 5 days just below it.). The December 1990 frost froze most things off this slope but the ferns looked better than ever. The dried fronds were used in tea to treat tuberculosis and colds. (The were used, doesn't mean they worked.) This fern would be perfect in a rock wall placed in a wildland garden.
