Oenothera hookerii, Hooker's Evening Primrose play movie
Hoorker's evening primrose is a perennial that grows flat on the ground sending up a 3' spike of 3-4" yellow flowers that open in the evening and morning. Use in the background. It is a heavy seeder, hard to fail. Do not use in a formal watered garden. The sphinx moth hangs around the flower at dusk and after dark. We've seen this primrose in the sand dunes around Morro Bay and at Mammoth Lake (sea level and 7000'). It will survive drought and flooding, sun, wind and cold. This flower is our logo as it represents the first native plant we ever grew. It is one of the first plants into a disturbed site and will stabilize the site providing ground protection with nice flowers. It will fail only when crowded out by other taller plants. I like the plant as it is tough, stable in new environments, and after it has pioneered the new spot it is gradually replaced with the dominant species of the area.

Oenothera hookeri tolerates sand and seasonal flooding.
Oenothera hookeri is great for a butterfly garden.
Foliage of Oenothera hookeri has color green and is deciduous.
Flower of Oenothera hookeri has color yellow.
