Description
A 6-10' long vine of thread-like stems bearing 1" magenta or purple-blue flowers. (It is a surprise which you will get as they seem to change even after we sort them.) It can be very showy on a sunny lattice work in a hot climate. It is native mixed in with shrubs in the southern deserts. It needs sun and regular water with good drainage. It does not tolerate long term cold or drought very well. Has recovered from the roots at 15, but had to reseed itself below that temperature. It will take temperatures as low as 0 F. in its range but that is the desert cold and is only there for a few hours. In our area it has trouble in the nursery site but is fine at our friend's house down lower. Although it is a desert plant it seems to tolerate a lot of water. Kearney & Peebles says "The showy snapdragonlike flowers make this plant well worth cultivating. It is suited to growing on trellises." It has a very delicate beauty.
Syn. Antirrhinum maurandioides, Asarina antirrhiniflora, Maurandya antirrhiniflora
