Iris missouriensis Western Blue Flag. No you do not always get one with a flower on it. You'll usually get on with leaves, on bad summers something they shut way down and the leaves even shrivel up. - grid24_24
Western Blue Flag is native from S. Dakota to southern California to B.C.. This Iris is a foot or so high perennial with 2-3 inch, pale lavender flowers. Western Blue Flag grows at higher elevations, in mountainous areas of California, emerges through snow in spring. Grows in sunny, open, moist areas such as meadows, surrounded by forests. In our garden these do not spread beyond the watered areas. Western Blue Flag does ok at lower elevations particularity where you have a seasonally wet spot such as a retention pond or rain discharge.

Iris missouriensis tolerates seasonal flooding and deer.
