Seaside Woolly Sunflower grows near the coast. This Eriophyllum species is a flat to mounding, 2 ft. high perennial with gray foliage that is covered with yellow when it flowers. Commonly found growing on coastal bluffs with Dudleya caespitosa, Cliff Buckwheat (Eriogonum parvifolium), Coastal Goldenbush (Isocoma menziesii ), and Sticky Monkey Flower (Diplacus aurantiacus), it's a great nectar plant for small native insects and butterflies. At our central coast ranges site it grows into a 3 ft. spike with bright yellow flowers. In 1985, on one coastal bluff area, the Sunflower, buckwheat, and goldenbush seemed alive and moving, they were so completely covered with fluttering butterflies, and buzzing bees; an amazing sight. Syn: Eriophyllum staechadifolium.
