Description

Pipestem Clematis is a deciduous, dioecious vine, that grows to 8-20' and has showy, creamy white flowers in Mar-Aug. Chaparral clematis is native in the coast ranges and Sierras. Fruits are plume-like. Plant is not as vigorous as Clematis ligusticifolia. I've seen this in three places so far; 1) Tehachapi, Water Canyon. It was growing next to a stream with Quercus chrys., Ribes nev., and Sambucus caer. growing around it. 2) Cuesta Summit growing with Lithocarpus, Quercus chrys. and Madrone. 3) In our neighborhood growing with Sycamores, Oaks, and Digger Pines.4.)in a very coastal area under Cornus stolonifera, Sycamores, Equisetum, and Lonicera hispidula, oops 4. Give sun to part shade, regular water and garden conditions.
