Fern bush, Chamaebatiaria millifolium, grows in rocky places in the sagebrush, pinyon-juniper and other mountain plant communities from California to Utah, southeast Oregon, Idaho and down into Arizona. In the Sacramento Valley it grows done into the foothills, but it also grows up to 3300 meter(11,000 ft.) in the White Mountains. Companions range from Pinus longaeva, Pinus flexilis, Ribes cereum, Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus pumilis, Betula occidentalis, Aquilegia formosa, Cercocarpus ledifolius, Holodiscus microphyllus, Pinus jefferyi, Arctostaphylos patula, Abies concolor, Purshia tridenata and Juniperus occidentalis.

Aromatic herbage and a pretty white flower. Related to Mountain Misery, looks and smells similar, but a little easier to grow. Funny, remove the snow off of Mountain Misery and the two look identical, until you dissect the flowers and fruit.

I love the smell of this plant.
