Description
A rare manzanita from the Ione area where it grows on acidic sandy soil on hard pan. The soils vary in characterics from those around Monterey Bay, Lompoc, Atascadero, Los Osos, to many of the areas in the interior of Mendocino county. A very uniform fine white sand on red hard pan to red clay. Associated plants include Quercus dumosa (Q. berberidifolia), Pinus sabiniana, Baccharis pilularis consanguinea, Rhamnus californica tomentella, Eriodictyon californicum, Arctostaphylos viscida, Arctostaphylos manzanita, Diplacus bifidus, and Adenostoma fasciculatum. If you live on a site with terrible sandy-clay soil that's harder than a rock in the summer and slippery-slime in winter and doesn't grow anything' this plant is for you!
