Del Mar manzanita was grown for a replacement planting in Del Mar. It is a clean gray manzanita with red bark and a rambling form that demands boulders, logs, walls, something to climb over and around. Del Mar manzanita grows in sand on hard pan just out of the salt spray up into full coastal sage scrub. Soils are very shallow and poor. Associated plants include Comarostaphylis, Xylococcus, Quercus and Salvia species. But it's hardy to at least 5F. and it did not die of drought in one of our droughts. Here the plant is very gray, in La Jolla where it's native it's a softer gray, like a suede leather with fine red trim.
