The town of Santa Margarita
From
the north or south turn off 101 onto Hwy 58, go through the town
of Santa
Margarita(not Rancho),
at
the east end of town turn right across the railroad tracks next
to the park. The park is on the right (with BATHROOMS) head east
on Hwy 58.
About 1 mile out of town you'll see a cemetery on the left,
then ½ mile further Hwy 58 turns left,
you
go straight(about time) onto Pozo Rd. and head for Santa
Margarita Lake and Pozo.
Not
across Carrizo Plains(some nice wildflowers in spring out there.
. . )
After another 3.3 miles on Pozo road you'll find Las Pilitas
road to the left,
turn
and go 6.3-6.6 miles up scenic Las Pilitas Rd.
(about 5 miles past the historic railroad bridge).
A
note to you city drivers:
City folks will find the road challenging because of the
wildlife, (quail, deer, bobcat, mountain lion, bear, eagles,
hawks, turkeys, pigs, foxes, ring tail are among the animals
customers have seen), native trees (yes we have native trees),
combined with narrow twists and turns. We find you frustrating to
drive behind, so please pull over and let the locals drive by.
The locals drive the road at 35/45 mph (according to how many
deer you've hit), tourists drive it at 12-15 mph. (I can't figure
it out because I have to ride the brake in 1st when I
get stuck behind them.) The bicyclists use this road heavily, if
they pass you going uphill on a bicycle, you're going too slow.
And stay on your side!!!
The big Valley oak at the end of the driveway has the nursery
sign. The nursery address is 3232 Las Pilitas Rd.. Across from
3253 Las Pilitas.
Our entrance on Las Pilitas road, from Pozo Road, looks like
this
If
you miss the straight away on Pozo Rd. and cross the concrete
bridge over the Salinas River go a little further and you'll find
Parkhill Road, go 8.8 miles down it , Las Pilitas is to the right
and the nursery is about 1 mile down to the right.
If you wish you can make the loop out to Pozo and
the Pozo Saloon.
Or go over to Santa
Margarita Lake.
Or stop in Santa
Margarita and get lunch at 'The Merc' and eat it at the Santa
Margarita Park.
