Acacia farnesiana

Acacia farnesiana

Identification

Genus: Acacia Species: farnesiana Variety: Cultivar:
Common name: Sweet Acacia.

Description

Deciduous tree or shrub, 15 ft, yellow flowers flowering in Jan-Feb, very fragrant, stems thorny so do not put next to walkway, alkaline tolerant, excellent in desert areas, prune up for patio tree, hardy to 25 degrees F or lower, we have had damage and death to the plants at about 20 degrees. We lost all our plants the winter of 1987, but it survived in Bakersfield at 18 F in 1990. Since the botanists keep questioning whether this species is native to California or not, (Some say the missionaries planted it around the missions for the fragrant flowers) we will probably discontinue this species.
